Monetary mapping · United Kingdom
The United Kingdom requires an explicit M2-equivalent mapping
The United Kingdom is one of the jurisdictions where the official monetary taxonomy does not map cleanly onto a series carrying the same M2 label used in the United States. The frozen MM2/QWM2 registry therefore uses Bank of England Retail M4 as the closest broad-money analogue and explicitly classifies it as an M2-equivalent mapping rather than as a literal U.S.-style M2 series.
That distinction is intentional and visible. Retail M4 is included because it provides the closest practical broad-money object for the production framework, not because the two national definitions are assumed to contain exactly the same instruments. The U.K. component is consequently an explicit harmonisation choice, one of the cases that illustrates why a global monetary index cannot simply require every source to have an identical label. The local sterling stock is then translated into current U.S. dollars, so GBP/USD movements also affect its MM2 contribution.
