Monetary mapping · Euro area
The euro area is treated as one monetary jurisdiction
MM2 uses the European Central Bank’s official euro-area M2 aggregate. The mapping is classified as a core M2 / close variant and is conceptually close to the U.S. reference without requiring a differently named national proxy. The important structural feature is that the euro area is treated as a single monetary jurisdiction, consistent with its common currency and central monetary authority.
This means the component is not constructed by separately weighting or summing country-level national M2 measures inside MM2. The ECB aggregate is the monetary object used directly. Its contribution to the global index is measured in current U.S. dollars, so the published euro-area money stock and the EUR/USD exchange rate jointly determine the dollar value observed in MM2. That translation effect is part of the current-USD measurement convention and should be distinguished from underlying euro-area monetary growth.
